MK info: Shao Kahn

SHAO KAHN
Appearances: Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3/UMK3/MK Trilogy, MK: Deception/Unchained, MK: Shaolin Monks, MK: Armageddon
Realm of Origin: Outworld
Species: Outworlder
Alignment: Evil
Fighting styles:
Tai Tzu (MK:D, MK:A)
Lui He (MK:D)
Weapons:
Wrath Hammer (all games except MKII)

One of the primary villains in the Mortal Kombat series, Shao Kahn is the Emperor of Outworld. He resembles an Asian warrior-king in many respects, and embodies evil in many forms. He is known for his godlike strength, extreme callousness, brutality and his fondness of personal executions, but rises above the level of a mere warlord through his intelligence and knowledge of black magic. Like his subordinate Shang Tsung, he has the power to consume other souls. His greatest strength is probably his ability to work towards his goals with great tenacity and his ability to organize, but his greatest weaknesses are his arrogance and his overconfidence.
Shao Kahn originally served as an advisor to Onaga when the latter ruled Outworld as the Dragon King. Onaga's Empire had become the most powerful in the realms and so he began searching for a way to become immortal. Before his goal could be realized, Shao Kahn made his move by poisoning Onaga and taking his kingdom. Leading whatever troops that remained loyal to the Dragon King, Kahn continued many of the former emperor's plans. He continued to add lesser realms to Outworld, either through direct conquest or through Mortal Kombat.
A milestone in his military victories was the merging of Edenia with Outworld. After his warriors had won in Mortal Kombat, Kahn invaded the realm. On the battlefield, Kahn killed King Jerrod, and took Queen Sindel as his wife, raising her daughter, Princess Kitana, as his own. He had the young princess trained as his personal guard and as an assassin. Sindel took her own life in an attempt to escape subservience to the Emperor. Unwilling to be denied, Kahn held her soul in Outworld, stopping her transition to the afterlife.
Many years later, Kahn chose Earthrealm as his next conquest. He sent Shang Tsung and eventually Goro to Earthrealm to prepare it for an invasion in the event of Goro maintaining his position of champion. A turning point came when Prince Goro defeated the Great Kung Lao and started a winning streak that would last for 500 years. Shang Tsung, a shapeshifter, supervised the tournament. The tenth Mortal Kombat however, saw the defeat of both Goro and Shang Tsung by a Shaolin monk, Liu Kang, ruining five hundred years of Tsung's investment.
Shang Tsung begged Shao Kahn for his life, and came up with a plan to lure Earth's chosen warriors to Outworld for a second tournament. Shao Kahn spared Tsung's life and restored his youth. If Earthrealm's champions could be killed, they would not be able to cause further damage to Kahn's plans.
Despite Kahn's vast power, Liu Kang's determination saw him through, and he defeated the despot. Unwilling to accept defeat, Kahn called his armies to destroy the Earthrealm warriors. They fled back to Earthrealm, out of Kahn's clutches.
By this time, Shang Tsung was able to resurrect Queen Sindel in Earthrealm, and Kahn would be able to cross the border to claim her. Kahn had Tsung proceed, and once he invaded Earthrealm, he began to merge it with his own realm of Outworld. Nearly every living being in Earthrealm had their souls ripped from their bodies by Kahn, claiming them as his own. Kahn sent extermination squads to hunt them down and kill the remaining survivors, but Lord Raiden had protected the souls of a handful of warriors. It would be their task to try to stop Kahn, and return Earthrealm to its normal state. It was Liu Kang who again managed to defeat Kahn. Worn down from the battle, Kahn recalled his squads and retreated back to Outworld. This stopped the merger with Outworld, and restored Earthrealm to its original status. To make matters worse for Kahn, many of his loyal soldiers had abandoned him, and Kitana had succeeded in turning Sindel to her side, restoring Edenia as an independent realm.
The emperor was now greatly weakened, and would remain so for a period of several years, remaining inactive during Shinnok's war against the gods. The Edenians had in the meantime made peace and military treaties with the Shokan, on whom Kahn had always heavily relied, and were ready to attack Outworld a few years later. It was only through his new commander Kano's ingenuity, and the stealth of his unreliable assassin Noob Saibot (who critically wounded Goro) was Kahn able to force the Edenian army into a draw. Soon afterwards, the sorcerers Quan Chi and Shang Tsung entered his throne room, and swore false allegiance to the emperor. The Deadly Alliance caught Shao Kahn off guard and seemingly killed him. This would appear to be the demise of the mighty Kahn.
In Mortal Kombat: Deception however, it is revealed that Kahn did not die, and that it was a clone that Quan Chi and Shang Tsung killed. The real Kahn appeared to the wounded Goro and, using what little power he had left, revived him, thus gaining Goro and the Shokan as allies once again.
Signature moves

Charging Spikes
Shao Kahn would shoulder ram his opponent with a green streak following behind him, much like Johnny Cage's Shadow moves. (all games)
Uplifting Knee
Shao Kahn would perform a rising knee attack with a green streak following behind him, much like Johnny Cage's Shadow moves. (all games except MKII)
Explosive Blast
Shao Kahn would fire off a green star-like fireball, seemingly from his mouth or eyes. (all games)

Ridicule
Shao Kahn would often taunt, mock, and of course ridicule his opponents with insults, mockery, or just plain laughter. A trademark of Shao Kahn's and what makes him one of the more memorable bosses in fighting game history. In Deception, performing a Ridicule could heal Shao Kahn, though only a tiny sliver of health would be recovered and could only be perform three times a match before it was automatically disabled. (all games)
Grab and Punch
Shao Kahn would lift his opponent up by the throat with one hand and then smash his fist into their face sending them sailing back. In Deception, this is simply his throw, and if performed next to death traps could automatically knock opponents into them. (all games execpt MKII)
Emperor's Shield
Shao Kahn would perform an uppercut like motion that would not only throw up a force field for a split second to deflect projectiles, but could also knock an opponent off his/her feet if physically too close. (MK:D, MK:U, MK:A)

KINTARO
Appearances: Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, MK: Shaolin Monks, MK: Armageddon
Realm of Origin: Outworld
Species: Shokan
Alignment: Evil
Fighting styles:
Tiger Fist (MK:A)
Weapons:
Saber Teeth (MK:A)

Kintaro was introduced as a replacement for the great Shokan prince Goro, and was everything Goro was, including being of the Shokan race, but not of the same family. Being the supreme commander of Outworld's armed forces, he is second only to Shao Kahn himself, and harder to defeat than Goro. He has more clearly defined feline aspects than Goro, with tiger stripes on his back (more recently, claws and cat-like digitigrade feet in his Armageddon makeover as well), and has the ability to spit fireballs from great distances.
In Mortal Kombat II, after hearing of Goro's defeat at the hands of Liu Kang, Kintaro vowed to avenge his comrade and crush Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat. Kintaro tried to prove his loyalty to Shao Kahn when he traveled to Earthrealm with a Tarkatan horde to defeat Johnny Cage. Although the attack failed due to the intervention of other Earthrealm warriors, Kintaro continued to serve Shao Kahn. After Shang Tsung was defeated again by Liu Kang, Kintaro then challenged Liu Kang in Mortal Kombat. Kintaro fought well, but lost. His fate after the second tournament is unknown.
In Mortal Kombat: Armageddon's Konquest mode, Kintaro is seen in the Netherealm along with Sheeva, Havik, and a legion of demons all apparently working in an attempt to overthrow Shinnok's rule at his spire. However, Shinnok later reveals that this was all created as a test for Taven, and that the Kintaro fought by him was an illusion.

MK info: Jade

JADE

Appearances: Mortal Kombat II (secret character), Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3/MK Trilogy, MK: Deception/Unchained, MK: Shaolin Monks, MK: Armageddon
Realm of Origin: Edenia
Species: Edenian
Alignment: Good
Fighting styles
Fan Zi (MK:D, MK:A)
Kuo Shou (MK:D)
Weapons
Steel fans (MKII)
Bo (all other games)

Jade is a childhood friend of Princess Kitana. While her motives were unclear, she served Shao Kahn alongside Kitana and Mileena as his personal assassin. When Kitana finally turned against Shao Kahn, Jade was ordered to capture her for the Emperor. She ultimately chose to join her friend and has since loyally assisted Kitana in her quest to free their native realm and restore its beauty. Now residing in the freed Edenia, Jade is a General of the Edenian Army and continues to dutifully serve Kitana and her mother Sindel.
As a female assassin adorned in a green skin-tight outfit, Jade was initially very similar in appearance to Kitana and Mileena, the only noticeable difference being her darker skin. She appeared first as a hidden, unplayable character in
Mortal Kombat II and would later become a regular character in Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3. Her main weapon of choice is a metal staff, but she also uses razor-edged boomerangs (dubbed "razorangs") as well.
Jade was not present during the events of Mortal Kombat Gold. It was at this time that Tanya betrayed Edenia to Shinnok and earned Jade's wrath. In Mortal Kombat: Deception, it was revealed that Jade had attempted to join Kitana and her allies in the battle against the Deadly Alliance. She had arrived too late, finding her friend's body lying on the ground with the other Earthrealm warriors. Heartbroken, Jade knelt beside her fallen friend's side and noticed a large creature approaching. She then hid in the nearby shadows and witnessed this evil menace, Onaga the Dragon King, resurrect the bodies of Kitana and her fallen friends. While they were resurrected, they were also placed under an evil spell and were told to meet up with the force controlling them at the Living Forest.
Jade followed in secret, only to discover that they were going to invade Edenia and hold Queen Sindel prisoner. Jade returned to Edenia to find Queen Sindel behind bars and guarded by her own daughter. Sindel could have fought for her freedom, but she couldn't bring herself to attack Kitana. Jade attacked Kitana and managed to trap her in a cage of her own while she freed Sindel. Kitana then began shouting for the guards to capture them, forcing Jade and Sindel to flee to the portal into Outworld. Before they went through the portal, Jade caught a glimpse of her enemy, Tanya, standing next to Onaga. Ermac and Liu Kang were the ones successful in freeing Kitana (along with Jax Briggs, Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade and Kung Lao) from Onaga's control.
Currently in Outworld with Kitana and Sindel, Jade has made it her personal mission to seek justice (or perhaps vengeance) against Tanya, who has betrayed Edenia yet again.

MK info: Smoke

SMOKE

Appearances: Mortal Kombat II, Mortal Kombat 3/UMK3/Mortal Kombat Trilogy, MK: Deception/MK: Unchained (as Noob-Smoke), MK: Armageddon
Realm of Origin: Earthrealm
Species: Cyborg (formerly Human)
Alignment: Good (forced into Evil)
Fighting styles:
Mi Tzu (MK:D, MK:A)

Judo (MK:A)
Weapons:
Axe (UMK3, MKT)

A former member of the Lin Kuei clan and a longtime friend of younger Sub-Zero, Smoke debuted in Mortal Kombat II as a hidden character to fight against. He was often spotted in the Living Forest stage in which he (along with Jade) peeked out of the trees. Like Reptile when he made his appearance, he was simply a grey clad version of Scorpion who moved extremely fast, and puffs of smoke emitted from his body. He would appear randomly before matches, offering clues that would enable the player to fight him, as Reptile had in the original Mortal Kombat.
Smoke accompanied Sub-Zero to Outworld on his mission to kill Shang Tsung, a mission that they could not accomplish. When Sub-Zero and Smoke returned to the Lin Kuei, they discovered that their clan had chosen to transform their best warriors into cyborgs, already performing the procedure on Sektor and Cyrax. Smoke and Sub-Zero turned on their clan and fled. Sub-Zero managed to escape, but Smoke was captured and converted into a cybernetic warrior, designated LK-7T2. Under the programming of the Lin Kuei, Smoke was forced to hunt his old friend. In this appearance, he was (and continues to be) a tortured, human soul trapped in the body of a cyborg. His most defining feature is the fact that he constantly seems to emit a smoke or vapor. This, combined with his power to teleport and turn invisible, once made him one of the Lin Kuei's top assassins.
During the events of
Mortal Kombat Trilogy and Shao Kahn's invasion of Earth, Smoke's fortunes continued to fail him. Although he discovered, with Sub-Zero's help, that he still retained his soul and was in fact one of Raiden's Chosen warriors and aided Sub-Zero in defeating Cyrax and Sektor, he was captured by Kahn's forces. The inert Smoke was transported to Outworld as a trophy and was locked away in the bowels of Kahn's fortress.
Nearly a decade later, however, he was discovered by
Noob Saibot. He reactivated the cyborg, whose nanotechnology set about repairing and improving his systems. Reprogramming Smoke to obey only him, Saibot turned the cyber-ninja into both his ally and template for a future army of cyber-demons that was to rise from the Netherealm. Although Ashrah's ending depicted Smoke's innate goodness battling his cyborg programming, Smoke remained paired with Noob until the next game.

SIGNATURE MOVES

Spear
In his human form, Smoke would send out a rope tipped with a Kunai at the end to impale the victim and pull them through the air towards him for a free hit and would cause minor damage, identical to Scorpion's version. In his cyborg form, Smoke would catapult a trident-like spear from his chest rather than his arm. (MKII, MK3, UMK3, MKT)
Teleport Uppercut / Smokeycut
Smoke would go underground and then reappear under the opponent's chin, hitting them on the way. (all games)
Air Throw

While in the air, Smoke could grab the opponent and throw them back on the ground. (MK3, UMK3, MKT)
Invisibility
Smoke disappears while a puff of smoke helps him become invisible. (MK3, UMK3, MKT)
Stinky Cloud
Smoke dodges back, leaving a cloud of black smoke in his former position, which chokes the opponent if they get caught in it. (MK:D, MK:A)
Stinky Fingers
Smoke waves his hands and a cloud of smoke is summoned a sweep away, which chokes the opponent if they are in its path. (MK:A)
Play Dead
Smoke falls flat on his back and vanishes in a puff of smoke then reappears behind the opponent. (MK:A)
Robo-Punch
Smoke dashes forward doing a straight punch. He did this move together with Noob Saibot in Mortal Kombat: Deception, as a part of Noob-Smoke. (MK:A)

In the Mortal Kombat universe, Noob Saibot is a wraith from the Netherealm, who was the original Sub-Zero and older brother to the current Sub-Zero. He was killed by Scorpion in the first tournament, in revenge for killing him in cold blood. A heartless, cold-blooded assassin, Noob Saibot had to earn his place in the Netherealm and became a deadly force to be reckoned with. In the ending of Mortal Kombat: Deception, it is shown that he is willing to kill even his own brother. Again, as seen in Deception, he has partnered with his brother's old ally, Smoke.
Like his name, clothes, and powers suggested, Sub-Zero's character was icy and distant. In all aspects, he was a cold-blooded killer with an utmost dedication to the principles of his clan, and to whoever had paid him to kill. Although essentially neutral, his soul possessed an evil taint brought about by his years as a remorseless killer.
The elder Sub-Zero made his first chronological appearance in Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero when the sorcerer Quan Chi hired the Lin Kuei to find an ancient amulet, and he was sent to find the map leading to its location. He did not know that Quan Chi had hired a Japanese ninja, Hanzo Hasashi, for the same task in case Sub-Zero failed. Hasashi and Sub-Zero encountered each other in the map room, where Sub-Zero ripped Hasashi's spine out along with his head, killing him in cold blood after a brief fight. After Sub-Zero delivered the map, Quan Chi made good on a promise to the Lin Kuei Grandmaster; the rival clan of the Shirai Ryu were wiped out. This slaughter, combined with Sub-Zero's merciless execution of Hanzo, fueled Scorpion, the vengeful spectre form of Hanzo, who would later participate in the Mortal Kombat tournaments.
After Sub-Zero delivered the amulet to Shinnok and Quan Chi, he was sent back to retrieve it by Earthrealm's protector, Raiden, who explained to him that the amulet was the key to releasing Shinnok. Sub-Zero stole the amulet from Shinnok and escaped the Netherealm, refusing an offer from Quan Chi to join the Brotherhood of Shadow and worship Shinnok. While in the Netherealm, he was warned by Quan Chi that he was able to enter the Netherealm only because his soul had been tainted with evil; apparently troubled by this, Sub-Zero asked Raiden if it was true. Raiden confirmed Sub-Zero's fears, but informed him that only he could alter his own destiny.
Upon returning to the Lin Kuei headquarters, he learned that he had been invited to the Mortal Kombat tournament; he was also hired to kill the host of the tournament, Shang Tsung, by one of Tsung's wealthy enemies. During this tournament, the elder Sub-Zero faced the murderous spectre of Hanzo Hasashi (still using his Shirai Ryu codename of Scorpion). In a reversal of fate, Scorpion murdered Sub-Zero by incinerating him into ashes. When Sub-Zero's soul fell into the Netherealm, Shinnok and Quan Chi were now able to recruit him into the Brotherhood of Shadow. From that point onward, he was renamed Noob Saibot and became the very thing he resisted becoming whilst still alive.
In a darkly ironic twist, Noob Saibot would now pledge allegiance and loyalty to Shinnok. One of his first tasks for his new lord would be to observe and report on the events taking place on Earthrealm and Outworld; to this end, he remained in the shadows during the Outworld tournament, faithfully monitoring the situation for the fallen Elder God.
During the events of MK Deception, Saibot slowly changed from a pawn into a player. Free to pursue his own interests, and uninterested in the affairs concerning the rise of Onaga, he plotted to create his own legion of assassins. While searching Kahn's abandoned fortress, he discovered the inert body of Smoke. Reprogramming the cyborg to remain loyal to him, he reactivated his nanotechnology, and formed plans to create an army of cyber-demons, using Smoke as a template.

Tarkatan Blades (all games)

Baraka was introduced as an unpredictable warrior in service of Outworld emperor Shao Kahn in Mortal Kombat II. He belongs to a race of nomadic mutants called Tarkata, later revealed in Mortal Kombat: Deception to be a crossbreed between vile Netherealm demons and denizens of Outworld, apparently populating the vast wastelands of Outworld. Baraka, like most other members of his race, possesses long blades extending from his forearms. Although he has had numerous incursions with the Earthrealm warriors, he appears not to have any particular rivalry or hatred towards Earth or its inhabitants. A loyal warrior, he fights for those that he calls "master".
In the events leading up to the second Mortal Kombat tournament, Baraka led the attack on the Shaolin Temple of Light in Earthrealm, which spurred Liu Kang to seek vengeance in Outworld as predicted by Shao Kahn. During the ensuing tournament, Baraka partnered with Mileena to overthrow Shao Kahn and rule Outworld, but canon states that their plan never came to fruition. Mileena was murdered and Baraka was sent away to the lowlands of Outworld.
Following Shao Kahn's fall from power after
Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Baraka escaped and spent time traveling alone. In the time before the events of Mortal Kombat Gold, Baraka encountered the necromancer Quan Chi while wandering through Edenia. Quan Chi offered Baraka a chance to rule the realm at his side if he agreed to join the army of Shinnok. Eager for battle, he readily accepted. Once again Baraka planned to betray his new masters, but after Shinnok was utterly defeated, his opportunity was also lost once again. During the events of Mortal Kombat: Deception, Baraka found yet another new master in the risen Dragon King, Onaga, in whose strength he had great faith. Freeing Mileena from her prison, Baraka recruited her to Onaga's ranks. She posed as Princess Kitana, using her position to misdirect the Edenian forces into combat against the Tarkatan raiding parties well away from Onaga. This was intended to give the Dragon King the time he needed to complete his schemes.

Mileena is a clone and evil twin of Kitana, created by Shang Tsung's sorcery for Shao Kahn, using Tarkatan physiology. She looks just like Kitana when her mask is on, but when it is off, her long, sharp Tarkatan teeth are exposed.
After Shao Kahn conquered the realm of Edenia and merged it with Outworld, he decided he would keep the former king's young daughter Kitana alive and raise her as his own. Although Kitana grew up loyal to the emperor, unaware that he had murdered her father, Kahn feared if she should ever discover the truth about her past, she'd turn against him.
Kahn then ordered his sorcerer
Shang Tsung to create an evil, vicious, and loyal clone of Kitana who would take her place. Tsung combined Kitana's essence with a Tarkatan's to achieve this purpose. However, something went wrong with the clone's creation and her face deformed into a hideous Tarkatan's mouth. Rather than disposing of her, she was given the name Mileena and introduced as Kitana's twin sister. Instead of replacing Kitana as originally planned, Mileena would be used to watch Kitana and make sure she remained loyal to Kahn. Mileena despises Kitana greatly, and feels that it is her own right to rule Edenia as Princess in her place. Her fondest wish is to kill her "sister", and claim her existence for her own. Something of an opportunist, she will make use of any chance to seize power that comes within her grasp.
During Mortal Kombat II, Shao Kahn began to grow suspicious of Kitana and Mileena was ordered to watch over her sister more closely. After finding out Kitana was indeed conspiring with the Earthrealm warriors, Mileena attacked Kitana, but the princess proved to be the superior fighter and killed her. Mileena's essence descended into Netherealm (Mortal Kombat's hell), giving her even more reason to hate her sister. Damned to the Netherealm, Mileena found herself recruited by the fallen Elder God Shinnok. During Mortal Kombat Trilogy Shao Kahn made an attempt to resurrect Mileena, Shinnok saw this as an opportunity to spy on the events unfolding in Earthrealm thus allowed Mileena to be brought back from the dead and granted the ability to read Kitana's thoughts. After Kahn was defeated, Mileena was summoned back to the Netherealm.
During Mortal Kombat Gold, Mileena assisted in Shinnok's invasion of Edenia. Seeing this as a chance to finally prove she is superior to Kitana, Mileena allowed her sister to escape Shinnok's dungeons. However, Mileena would again be denied. After Shinnok's defeat, she was again bested by Kitana and secretly locked away in an Edenian prison, perhaps in the hope that she would one day reform.
Mileena remained imprisoned for many years, until the Dragon King, Onaga, returned during Mortal Kombat: Deception and began his own invasion of Edenia. Mileena was freed from her prison by Baraka. She joined Onaga, and was ordered to pose as Kitana in order to mislead the princess' armies while Onaga gathered his strength. Mileena accepted, seeing this as a chance to gain some amount of revenge against Kitana. However, as Mileena began her deception, she also began to consider taking control of the armies for herself.

Flying Blade (MKG)

A primary hero in the Mortal Kombat saga, Kitana is the princess of Edenia and the daughter of Queen Sindel. She is over 10,000 years old, yet she appears only to be in her mid twenties to early thirties. Through the years, she has risen to great importance, first as the loyal stepdaughter of Shao Kahn; then his enemy, tearing herself away from his grasp and freeing her home realm of Edenia; and then leading an army into Outworld to combat any chance of Shao Kahn rising to power again. Kitana is a strong combination of discipline, intelligence, love, and perseverance. She shared a subtle love interest with Earthrealm champion Liu Kang, until he was murdered by the Deadly Alliance. She has aligned herself on the good side, despite her loyalty to Shao Kahn for most of her life until learning the truth about her past and real family.
She was introduced as Shao Kahn's personal assassin and daughter, but it was hard to guess her true feelings or alignment, which were revealed to the Earthrealm warriors during the tournament. She was not the daughter of Shao Kahn, but was in fact his stepdaughter, adopted by Kahn after he seized the realm of Edenia. To strengthen Kahn's claims to the Edenian throne, he killed its king, Jerrod, and married Jerrod's wife Sindel, who was Kitana's mother and would later commit suicide, when Kitana was still a child. Suspecting Kitana would someday learn the truth, Kahn instructed Shang Tsung to create a twin for Kitana, Mileena; although she was actually a grotesque and evil clone originally meant to replace her, she was instead used to keep watch over Kitana.
Kitana grew up dutifully loyal to Shao Kahn, whom she believed was her real father. She grew up to be one of Shao Kahn's personal assassins, alongside her "sister" Mileena, and her good friend
Jade. At some point in Kitana's life, she finally discovered the truth about her real father, Mileena's origins, and how Shao Kahn conquered her realm through constant visions in her dreams.
Appalled, disgusted, and devastated that her whole life had been a lie, Kitana vowed to do all in her power to overthrow Shao Kahn and restore Edenia to its former beauty and perhaps by doing so, redeem herself for all the evil she committed while serving him.
Kitana's chance finally came during Mortal Kombat II, when Shao Kahn and Shang Tsung lured Earth's heroes into Outworld. Kitana entered the tournament, but secretly began to contact one of Earth's heroes (most likely Liu Kang) trying to help them defeat Kahn. However, Kitana's efforts were discovered by her clone Mileena. Mileena attacked her traitorous "sister", forcing Kitana to defend herself. She defeated and killed Mileena but this act revealed that she was no longer loyal to Shao Kahn.
After the Earthrealm warriors escaped from Outworld, Kitana found herself accused of treason and sentenced to death for killing Mileena. However, after Sindel's resurrection and Shao Kahn's subsequent invasion of Earthrealm, she managed to escape and rejoin her newfound allies from Earth. Her main purpose was to convert the resurrected Sindel and remove the evil taint in her soul, but also had to contend with her friend Jade, who was sent by Kahn to capture her. Kitana managed to convince her to also turn against Kahn and join the forces of good. Jade then helped Kitana defeat Reptile, another assassin sent by Kahn to capture her. Eventually, Kitana succeeded in freeing her mother Sindel from Kahn's grasp, which ultimately was crucial to his subsequent defeat at Liu Kang's hands. Kitana and Sindel were able to separate Edenia from Outworld. Before leaving Earthrealm, Kitana thanked Liu Kang for all he had done.

Signature moves

Fan Toss / Ground Fan
Kitana throws one of her steel fans to her opponent. Because the move could be executed both on the ground and in mid-air, it was a great way to finish off a combo, making Kitana a deadly character in Mortal Kombat II. In Deadly Alliance, Kitana also has the option to throw her steel fan, but there's a catch: if the thrown fan connects, it would impale the enemy; if it missed or was blocked, it was gone entirely. Whether it connected or missed, Kitana was only able to throw her fans once per round. This has been altered in Armageddon, as she can use multiple fan tosses in a single round, and the thrown fan only cuts the enemy and falls away, as her original fan projectile from the second game did. (all games)
Square Wave Punch
Kitana jumps into the air and attacks incoming foes with a flying punch. This attack is taken from Sonya during her absence in Mortal Kombat II, however, in later games where they both appeared, both of them kept this attack (with the exception of Deadly Alliance, in which neither of them had this attack). Interestingly, Sonya has this attack with a name change, "Face Planter", in Armageddon, while Kitana still has this attack with its original name. (MKII, UMK3, MKG, MK:SM, MK:A)
Fan Lift
Kitana spins her fans, levitating her opponent helplessly in the air. This attack served as both an anti-air attack and a set-up for juggle combos. This was one of the most devastating moves in MKII as players could avoid jump attacks and handicap the player for a limited time, yet the effectiveness of the move has decreased significantly in each game since then. In Deadly Alliance and Armageddon, performing this move while in an unarmed fighting style will automatically switch the player into Steel Fan style. (all games)
Fan Swipe
Kitana slashes at her enemy with her razor sharp fan. (MKII, MKG)
Pretty Kick
Kitana flies toward her opponent, kicking him/her multiple times. (MK:DA, MK:U, MK:A)
Pixie Dust Teleport
Kitana disappears in a violet cloud and reappears behind her opponent. This move is taken from Jade. (MK:A)
