Batman villain info: Mr Freeze

VICTOR FRIES AKA MR. FREEZE

Mr. Freeze, real name Dr. Victor Fries (pronounced as Victor "Frees" or "Freeze"), is a DC Comics supervillain, an enemy of Batman. Created by Bob Kane, he first appeared in Batman #121 (February 1959).
Freeze is a scientist who must wear a cryogenic suit in order to survive, and bases his crimes around a "cold" or "ice" theme, complete with a "cold gun" that freezes its targets solid. In the most common variation of his origin story, he is a former cryogenics expert who suffered an industrial accident while attempting to treat his terminally ill wife, Nora.

Origins

In the Pre-Crisis continuity series, it is explained that Mr. Freeze was a rogue scientist whose design for an "ice gun" backfired when he inadvertently spilled cryogenic chemicals on himself, resulting in his needing sub-zero temperatures to survive. As a child, he was fascinated by freezing animals. His parents, horrified by his "hobby", sent him to a strict boarding school, where he led a miserable life, feeling detached from humanity. In college, he met a young woman named Nora, whom he fell in love with and ultimately married.
Two years after their marriage, Nora fell terminally ill, diagnosed with a lethal disease known as MacGregor's Syndrome. Freeze takes on a job working for a large company run by the ruthless Ferris Boyle. Freeze discovered a way to put Nora into cryo-stasis (using company equipment without permission), and preserved her in that state hoping to sustain her until a cure could be found. Boyle found out about the experiment and attempts to have her brought out of stasis, overruling Freeze's frantic objections. A struggle ensues, in which Boyle kicked Freeze into a cryogenic serum tank and left him for dead. Freeze survived the accident, but his body temperature had been lowered dramatically; he could now only live at sub-zero temperatures, forced to wear a special refrigerating suit to stay alive. As Mr. Freeze, he used cryonic technology to create a special gun, which could fire a cold beam that freezes any target within its range.

Analysis of Criminal Insanity

Like most Batman villains, Mr. Freeze plans his crimes about a specific theme; in his case, ice and cold. In darker incarnations of the Batman mythos, Mr. Freeze's obsession with ice stems from personal tragedy, and his crimes are inspired by his desire to make the rest of the world as miserable as he is. He freezes areas around him using special weapons and equipment, most notably a handheld "cold gun", which could come in the form of a pistol or machine gun. His refrigeration suit grants him superhuman strength and durability, making him one of the most powerful villains in Batman's rogues gallery. He has even shown to be a formidable opponent for Superman. Some interpretations suggest that because Fries has been soaked in the serum he intended to use for cryo-preservation, his age progression has slowed drastically.

In the Underworld Unleashed storyline, the demon Neron granted Mr. Freeze the ability to generate sub-zero temperatures, no longer needing his freeze-gun or refrigeration suit. Later he gained a new subzero armor and weaponry.

Portrayal on film

Mr Freeze is one of two main villains in "Batman and Robin", the other being Poison Ivy. Victor Fries, portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger, was a scientist who won a Noble Prize for the development of cryogenic technology. He was married to his college sweetheart, but she was diagnosed with MacGregor's Syndrome 2 years later. Sickened with sorrow, Fries attempted to save her using cryogenic technology. However, the experiment went terribly wrong and Fries' equipment malfunctioned, consuming him and his lab in an explosion of ice. He survived the accident, but now his body could only survive at sub-zero temperatures, and Nora's condition had become even more serious. In an effort to find a cure for his wife, Fries began robbing museums of large diamonds, believing they may be a source to the cure for Nora's illness. He is stopped by Batman & Robin in his first attempt, but managed to escape after freezing Robin.
At a jewlery auction, Freeze made his return and stole a large diamond necklace donated by Bruce Wayne. Batman and Robin followed and captured him, imprisoning Freeze in Arkham Asylum.
He was broken out of the asylum by new allies,
Poison Ivy and Bane. Back at Freeze's hideout, Poison Ivy disconnected the cable to the nitrogen chamber that was keeping Freeze's wife Nora alive. Ivy then informed Freeze that Batman killed her by shutting off her life-supporting chamber, thus resulting in Ivy and Freeze combining forces and planning to destroy Gotham along with the rest of the world.
Batman and Freeze had a major showdown at the lab, with Freeze still bent on revenge and thinking that Batman was the one who killed his wife. Batman won the fight ,while Batgirl and Robin unfreezed Gotham. Batman showed Freeze a recording of Ivy during her fight with Batgirl; it shows Ivy telling Batgirl that she was the one who pulled the plug. Freeze was angered by the betrayal, but was quickly informed by Batman that his wife is not dead; she had been restored in cryogenic slumber and had been moved to Arkham, waiting for him to finish his research. Batman proceeded to ask Freeze for the cure he had created for the first stage of MacGregor's Syndrome, the disease that Freeze's wife is suffering from, for a friend (Alfred) who is dying. Freeze essentially atoned for his misunderstanding by giving him the medicine he had developed. At the manor, Batman attaches the tubes to Alfred's life support, and Alfred fully recovered within hours. Freeze walked in the cell where Ivy was residing in, informing her that he is her new cellmate and intends to make her life a living hell for betraying him and nearly killing his wife.
